Integration of Persons with Disabilities into the Community

One of the critical challenges, which persons with disabilities suffer, is social isolation and exclusion from community activities and equal opportunities, since not many people seem to understand them. This is facilitated by communication break-down (as for the cases of hearing impaired persons and to other persons who does not fall in the same category and probably do not know sign language). Nairobi Family Support Services works to ensure that the persons with disabilities are well integrated into the community by adopting an inclusive approach to service delivery and sensitizing other development practitioners to include persons with disabilities in planning and design of the development interventions. NFSS jointly with Handicap International has piloted inclusive education in the following 5 schools in Kibera (Joseph Kangethe, Toi, Olympic, Old Kibera and Mbagathi Road primary schools.)



Boys and girls with disability both have access to education in preschool and primary school level through promotion of inclusion and reinforcement of the basic education system in Kibera.


Better participation and achievement in education of disabled girls and boys and greater acceptance by others in society.



Children with disability benefit from a better participation and achievement in education and from a more widely spread culture of disability inclusion in their society.


Children are better accepted an integrated in their communities regardless of disability and differences.


 Background Information

Nairobi Family Support Service (NFSS) has been working in slums of Nairobi mainly Kibera, Kangemi and Dagoretti providing Community Based Rehabilitation Services to disabled children for over 20 years. Parents of children with disabilities started it as a local CBO in 1982 with support from Action Aid Kenya. NFSS has since developed and was registered as a local NGO in 1996, with the mandates of carrying out CBR activities which include Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, home care trainings for parents and guardians and assists disabled children with appliances to improve on their mobility in the three catchments areas. A committee elected by members for a period of three years, runs the NGO and it includes parents of children with disabilities. 


 Problem Statement

Having worked with the community for the past 20 years have identified needs of persons, whereby education and employment is their greatest needs. Although, special needs education assumes that human differences are normal and that learning must accordingly be adapted to the needs of the child rather than the child fitted to pre-ordained assumption regarding the pace and the nature of the learning process.


The children’s integration in their local school is therefore linked to a wider movement to promote an inclusive society. One of the reasons often given for disabled children not attending school is the distance from home and the lack of mobility appliances. NFSS will build simple ramps, rails and lighting the rooms (schools) for children using wheelchairs and provide accessible play facilities.


There is no doubt that in this kind of community involvement will enable individual children to attend school, which will create a major impact on the attitudes of the whole community towards disability. Children with learning difficulties, who may previously have been hidden will be transformed through this program, hence children will became more socially integrated.


In this project we aim at integrate children with disabilities into existing selected local school; a baseline survey was carried out in 5 schools in Kibera slum to find out whether they have included children with disability in their schools and if they are willing to. From these preliminary findings, NFSS was able to select 3 schools out of 5 who took the idea positively. From the selected 3 schools; 2 have units already existing for children with disabilities.
